Why is the environment such a big topic in the industrial sector?

The environment is an increasingly important topic in industry as industrial activities have a considerable impact on the environment - factories, power plants, mines, refineries, etc., use vast amounts of natural resources, produce waste and pollutants, and negatively impact the global climate.

The environment is fundamental for life on Earth, and it is increasingly crucial to consider industry's impacts on it. It is therefore essential that industrial companies adopt sustainable practices in order to protect the environment.

In addition, industrial activities can have negative consequences on the communities that surround them, such as air and water pollution, deforestation, and the disruption of natural ecosystems. This means that people living near industrial sites may therefore be exposed to risks to their health and well-being.

It is also increasingly recognised that the sustainability of our economy is intrinsically linked to the preservation of the environment, which is why it is vital for industrial companies to adopt sustainable practices - in order to limit their environmental impact and ensure sustainable economic growth in the long term.

Finally, consumers are increasingly environmentally conscious, and tend to favour businesses that act to protect the environment. This can be an asset for businesses that want to stand out from their competitors.

What actions can we take in favour of the environment?

There are several ways in which industry can better take the environment into account. First, businesses can optimise their use of natural resources by reducing energy, water, and raw material consumption. This not only limits environmental impact, but also reduces operational costs. Here in France, it is recommended that heating temperatures in workplaces be limited at 19°C to reduce energy consumption.

Companies can also implement waste management systems to reduce waste and treat it in an environmentally friendly manner. Measures can be introduced in order to reduce production of pollutants, such as greenhouse gas emissions or fine particle emissions.

It is also important for companies in the industrial sector to consider the impact of their activities on surrounding communities. This can be done by working with local organisations to come up with solutions that both protect the environment and support communities affected by industrial activities.

Finally, businesses can invest in environmentally friendly technologies and R&D to find more sustainable ways of producing their products and services.

In summary, industry must take the environment into account in order to ensure the sustainability of our economic activities and to protect the planet for future generations. Businesses that adopt sustainable practices also have a positive image among consumers, strengthening their attractiveness in the market.

How is LGC Industries rising up to the challenge?

LGC Industries has adopted a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) approach in line with our ISO 45001 and Silver Ecovadis 2022 certifications to tackle our environmental impact. With a management structure based on continuous improvement, our steadfast belief in the “quality, safety and environment” informs our daily desire for sustainable business, respect and exemplarity.

To help achieve this, at LGC we are particularly conscious of our energy consumption, especially when it comes to heating and electricity. With our innovative machines, energy is managed automatically. The machines are switched off when they are not in production.

When it comes to waste management, we make sure to recycle our raw material chips by separating steel scraps from oil. These two materials are then recycled by a specialist., and the steel will be made into raw material once again.

90% of our suppliers are located less than 500km from Avrillé (LGC's production site), and 100% of them are located less than 900km away in order to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.

We are also investing in Research and Development in the hope of having more innovative machines and green working methods.

Our impact in 2023

In summary

It is important to take nature and the environment into account - not just in industry.

Environmental certifications can help consumers choose the company they wish to work with depending on each one's policies and actions on the topic.
